... to push the envelope with their creativity. A package was supplied to each student detailing rules and regulations of the contest. With the 2010 Olympics fast approaching we felt it suiting to request their submissions have an Olympic theme. Sheldon provided templates to each student as a base for their design ideas. Luda Paul; Instructor of the DGC Design class, was gracious enough to lend us her class time to create this advertisement. The students were allotted 4 weeks of their program to complete a design for Apache Superior Printing. This project was incorporated into the curriculum and each student was graded on its completion.
Submission cut off was October 30, 2009. Apache’s judging day took place on November 9, 2009. Seven individual's expertise was requested for this day including industry leader in design, Todd Fraser from Tandem Marketing. After scoring each design, the final 3 were determined by a group discussion. With our company's President's, Marilyn Bourget, generous contributions of awards, the contest quickly became an outstanding opportunity for the SAIT DGC students. First place in addition to high profile display of their work, received a new iPOD classic and two Calgary Flames tickets. We added a second and third place to the mix with dinner gift cards and complimentary Hitmen tickets. There were 3 honourable mentions which made our decisions quite difficult but when all said and done we are quite pleased with our choices.
The winning design would receive placement of their design idea in a high profile advertisement slot, printed as a half page ad in the Calgary Flames Blaze magazine and The Calgary Hitmen Zone magazine. The Calgary Flames Blaze magazine being sold at MAC convenience stores will be available for purchase Nov 30th 2009. In addition the magazine ad, their design would be mirrored in the Pengrowth Saddledome as a back lit display. This display case is found along the Pengrowth Saddledome concord and will be up for games commencing Dec 7th 2009 through to the spring of 2010.
